As veterinary practice continues to evolve, the need for knowledgeable, confident nurses in emergency and critical care is growing rapidly. Yet for many professionals, accessing high-quality training alongside work commitments can be a challenge.
Our re-branded Level 4 Veterinary Nursing course in Emergency and Critical Care has been designed to meet that need. Delivering accessible, flexible, and academically robust learning without compromising on clinical relevance.
This is a theory-led distance learning programme, built specifically for veterinary nurses who want to deepen their understanding of emergency and critical care while balancing professional and personal commitments.
Open to all RCVS registered veterinary nurses and our international colleagues with a similar accredited qualification, the Cert VN ECC provides a new route for veterinary nurses to develop their skills in emergency medicine and provide enhanced patient care.
Annual intakes are in April & October.

Course content
A Level 4 industry recognised qualification, exploring the fundamentals of ECC, the course provides a strong foundation in:
- Principles of emergency patient assessment and triage
- Pathophysiology of critical illness
- Monitoring and nursing care of the hospitalised patient
- Fluid therapy, shock, and stabilisation
- Evidence-based approaches to emergency care
Through structured and supported online learning, guided reading, and applied case studies, learners will develop not only knowledge, but the ability to think critically, interpret clinical situations, and support decision-making in practice.
This course doesn’t aim to replace hands-on experience, it enhances it. By building on your existing skills and knowledge and strengthening the theoretical foundation behind ECC, it empowers veterinary nurses to contribute more confidently and effectively within the clinical team.

Certificate entry requirements
- A veterinary nurse qualification and be RCVS registered (or equivalent for overseas candidates)
- A good level (at least 6 months) of continuous small animal work-based experience, post qualification
- Proficiency in English Language (at IELTS 7 or equivalent) proof may be required
- Access to clinical environment (preferably small animal) beneficial but not essential
Course structure
The course is delivered online over a period of 18 months, with 8 core units covering the fundamentals of emergency and critical care. Students are provided with structured online learning materials, guided reading and case-based activities to support applied understanding. Independent study is supported by tutor guidance.
Students should progress through the core units, submitting coursework assessments and assignments to their tutors for marking and feedback, according to the listed intake due dates.
Final award of the Cert VN ECC requires completion of all course components to a satisfactory level and successful completion of both final assessment papers.
You should expect to spend at least 15 – 20 hours a week on coursework, research and reading.
You might find you spend more or less time than this some weeks, but good time management skills and a lot of motivation are essential to successfully complete the Cert VN ECC.
