24/7 emergency and specialty hospital in Glasgow recognised after £1.5 million refurbishment

Vets Now’s newly-refurbished hospital in Glasgow has won the refurbishment category at the 2019 British Veterinary Hospital Association (BVHA) Design Awards.

The renowned emergency hospital for pets, located to the west of the city centre in Glasgow, relaunched at the start of 2019 after tripling in size, making it one of the most advanced facilities of its kind in Europe.

The 24/7 emergency and specialty hospital expanded its current site by a further two floors, enabling it to grow its daytime and out-of-hours emergency and referral caseload to cope with increased demand from both vet practices and pet owners.

Kirsten McLeod, hospitals director at Vets Now’s said: “We have created a truly exceptional emergency centre of excellence here in Glasgow, and we’re delighted that we’ve been awarded the refurbishment category at the BVHA Design Awards.

“The aim of the refurbishment and expansion was to create a better flow around the hospital, and, importantly, to create more space.

“The ground floor offers an entire space dedicated to emergency and critical care, housing a custom-built intensive care unit. And a new first floor offers greater square footage to accommodate more theatres and allowed us to provide new services such as interventional medicine and new surgical procedures.

“In addition to this, our new and improved office and meeting space provides an open-plan working environment for the increasing hospital team, enhancing collaboration across the hospital’s core disciplines.”

The BVHA Design Awards recognise the highest standards of excellence in design, build, equipment, maintenance and management of veterinary hospitals. The biannual design awards have three categories – new build premises, conversion of buildings previously used for other purposes and refurbishment of existing practice premises.

Glasgow is one of two specialist UK emergency hospitals run by Vets Now, the other being in Manchester. Both hospitals have emergency and critical care at their core, with complementary referral services including internal medicine, diagnostic imaging, oncology, soft tissue and orthopaedic surgery.
