Veterinary Internships At Vets Now 24/7 Emergency & Specialty Hospitals | Vets Now

Are you ready for an internship that's extraordinary?

At Vets Now, we offer rotating small animal internships and discipline-specific internships that provide qualified veterinary surgeons with a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience and develop and expand their knowledge in veterinary medicine.

Aimed at new or recent graduates, our small animal internships serve as an excellent foundation for those wishing to pursue specific discipline specialist training in the future (residency), or those keen to experience frontline work in emergency medicine.

Teaching is an essential component of the programme, with weekly didactic seminars and lectures. There is also the opportunity for extensive in-house CPD. Interns who successfully complete the programme can choose to stay with Vets Now by taking up a full or part-time role in one of our 57 out-of-hours clinics across the UK.

Rotating internships

Our rotating internship programme is overseen by Daniel Lewis, an RCVS, American and European specialist in emergency and critical care, and successful applicants are based in either our Glasgow or Manchester emergency and specialty hospitals.

During the 13-month programme, interns have the chance to work under the close supervision of outstanding veterinary specialists and referral clinicians across our network, in the following services:

  • Emergency and critical care
  • Soft tissue surgery
  • Orthopaedic surgery
  • Internal medicine
  • Diagnostic imaging (Glasgow only)
  • Oncology (Glasgow only)

This internship involves rotating on four or six-weekly blocks through each service, with time also available to perform externships. Interns also play an integral role in the busy out-of-hours emergency service across our sites, where they have primary care responsibility.

Discipline-specific internships

Our discipline-specific programmes are designed for highly motivated veterinary graduates who wish to expand their skills, knowledge and experience in their chosen area. Successful candidates will also have increased exposure to discipline-specific teaching and research opportunities.

These positions are suitable as a foundation for those wishing to pursue specific specialist training in the future, or those keen to increase their knowledge and experience for a return to general practice.

One position is available in internal medicine/oncology and a second in general surgery. These are both 12-month internship posts.

Successful candidates will spend the majority of their clinical time with the respective referral teams, although in order to facilitate a balanced clinical experience, they will also gain experience in other related disciplines and in the out-of-hours service.

The ability to collaborate with existing research projects will be encouraged, and successful candidates should expect subject-focused tutorials, as well as access to the in-house teaching provided to the rotating internships.
