Thrive at work. Flourish at home.

Get the best of both worlds with a weekend-only contract, available for vets and vet nurses across the UK.

Thought working out of hours meant working all hours? Think again. At Vets Now, many vets and vet nurses have joined us on weekend-only contracts and they’ve found it revolutionary.

With a weekends-only contract, you’ll help us save pets’ lives and experience the rewards of ECC – with enough time and freedom left over for your family, your other home commitments, and your social life too!

Why join us?

Steady income & employee benefits

You’ll get an industry leading salary, plus access to our full benefits suite – including paid memberships, medical insurance and generous CPD & holiday allowance.

Work during the daytime

We’ll work together to create a contract that suits you and your schedule – whether you work days, nights, every weekend or just one day a month, the choice is yours.

Frequently asked questions

  • Will I have to work sole charge?

Absolutely not. Weekends are our busiest times so we’re always fully staffed, which means you’ll have a tremendous team around you throughout every shift.

  • Will I have to work during the night?

Not at all. In fact, most of our weekends-only vacancies are primarily for daytime shifts, and you can choose between shifts that kick off bright and early or start late in the afternoon.

  • Will I have to work every weekend?

Not at all — you don’t actually have to work any full weekends. We’re keen to chat with vets or vet nurses who want to work every weekend, or with those who can only commit to one Saturday or Sunday a month. Essentially, whatever your situation, we can draw up a contract that works for you.
You’ll also have the option to pick up ad-hoc shifts as overtime, in your own and other Vets Now clinics.

  • Who are these roles for?

Anyone and everyone. Perhaps you’re a locum looking to retain your shifts on a regular basis but still want freedom with the bulk of your time off. You might work in general practice and want to develop your emergency & critical care (ECC) skills without a total career shift.

You could be a parent returning to work and looking for regular hours that won’t impact your family commitments. You might want to add ECC experience to your CV without committing to full-time nights. Or perhaps you want to pursue a passion and build an ECC career around your lifestyle.

To sum up, if you’re a qualified vet or vet nurse with experience in clinic, we’d love to hear from you.

  • What benefits do weekend staff receive?

You’ll find that there’s an enhanced pay rate, and you’ll enjoy a full package of benefits (even if you’re only contracted to one shift a month.) This includes full RCVS and Veterinary Defence Society fees paid, private medical insurance, pension contributions, CPD allowance, holiday pay, and maternity, paternity and adoption leave.

We can even support you in studying for a certificate.

  • What support will be available to me?

Teamwork is really important to us. Being part of the permanent Vets Now family will involve sharing information, regular coaching and mentoring, and our senior staff will support your CPD goals too.

  • Can I visit the clinic before I start?

Absolutely. If you’re still deciding whether weekend shifts are for you, you’re more than welcome to arrange a clinic visit – where you’ll have a chat with the Principal Vet and they’ll be able to answer any questions you have. Email our talent team to arrange your visit by clicking below.
