Vets Now Referrals Manchester and East Neuk Veterinary Centre offer a unique dual-site residency opportunity in small animal surgery. Vets Now Referrals Manchester is a busy multi-disciplinary referral hospital with soft tissue and orthopaedic caseloads, supported by Internal Medicine and Emergency & Critical Care specialists. East Neuk Veterinary Centre is a high-volume orthopaedic referral hospital on the east coast of Scotland, with modern facilities and over 1,000 primary cases per year.

Together, these hospitals provide an ECVS-approved dual-site residency programme, giving residents comprehensive exposure to diverse surgical caseloads across two highly experienced teams.

Focus on your Future

This four-year residency programme provides structured training in small animal surgery, combining hands-on clinical experience, mentorship, and opportunities for research and professional development.

Residents will rotate between Manchester and East Neuk in six-month blocks, gaining exposure to both soft tissue and orthopaedic surgery, contributing to weekend emergency cover, and participating in academic projects.

This residency is ideal for candidates aiming to become a specialist surgeon, strengthen surgical skills, and prepare for ECVS board examinations.

Residents gain extensive experience in both orthopaedic and soft tissue surgery within supportive, specialist-led teams across two complementary hospitals.

Vets Now Referrals Manchester

Multi-disciplinary hospital with dedicated theatres, intraoperative fluoroscopy, on-site CT, laparoscopy and thoracoscopy. Residents benefit from internal referrals and a 24-hour emergency service supported by ECC clinicians and interns.

East Neuk Veterinary Centre

High-volume orthopaedic referral hospital with modern facilities and over 1,000 primary cases per year. Situated on the east coast of Scotland, with Edinburgh within commuting distance.

Key Responsibilities

As a Small Animal Surgery Resident, you will:

  • Participate in the planning, diagnosis, and surgical treatment of referral cases.
  • Develop skills in both orthopaedic and soft tissue surgery.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues from Internal Medicine, Emergency & Critical Care, and Oncology.
  • Contribute to research projects, case discussions, journal clubs, and teaching opportunities.
  • Maintain accurate clinical records and uphold the highest standards of patient care.
  • Engage positively in inclusive, collaborative team discussions.
  • Provide weekend emergency cover as part of the rotation schedule.

Requirements

To be eligible, you must:

  • Hold a veterinary degree recognised by the RCVS.
  • Be registered (MRCVS) or eligible for registration.
  • Have a minimum of two years’ clinical experience post-graduation, ideally including a rotating internship in a multidisciplinary referral centre.
  • Be eligible to work in the UK.
  • Demonstrate strong communication, collaboration, and time management skills.
  • Remain calm under pressure while providing compassionate, professional care.
  • Candidates without an internship will be considered if they can demonstrate equivalent clinical experience.
  • Candidates requiring visa sponsorship may be able to be considered

  • £35,000 for year 1 – increasing to £40,000 for years 2 to 4.
