Blood transfusions can feel daunting, especially when they are not part of everyday practice. This practical CPD session is designed specifically for first opinion veterinary teams and
will focus on the knowledge and skills needed to recognise when a transfusion may be required and confidently manage the patient through the initial stages.
Tanvi Kamat, ECC Resident, will cover selecting appropriate patients, blood typing and compatibility, sourcing and handling blood products, safe administration, patient monitoring and recognising transfusion reactions. We will also discuss when a transfusion can be started in practice, when referral may be appropriate and how to stabilise the patient before transfer.
Using practical guidance and real clinical scenarios, the session aims to help first opinion teams feel more prepared when faced with a critically anaemic or bleeding patient.
