Five weeks into the Cutting Edge programme and our recruits are midway through their mentored shifts.
Our Cutting Edge Q&A this week is with Marta Garcia Arce, who hails from Barcelona in Spain. Marta is currently gaining frontline experience in our busy Thamesmead clinic.
Marta developed an interest in ECC while on an internship in Barcelona and has followed her passion ever since. If you think a career in ECC is for you, sign up for Cutting Edge here.
Name: Marta Garcia Arce
Where did you go to university? Barcelona
Why did you decide to become a vet? I’ve loved animals since I was a kid, and have always wanted to be a vet. I couldn’t imagine myself doing anything else.
How did you end up at Vets Now? I graduated from university in 2014 and while studying spent five months doing an externship at Vets Now in Swindon. After graduating, I began working in a first opinion clinic but later took up a position on a rotating internship in Barcelona. When this finished in 2015, I realised that my passion for ECC had grown, so I decided to come to the UK and further my learning. In 2016 I was offered another rotating internship at the University of Edinburgh, which I finished a few weeks ago. As I wanted to keep growing my skills and knowledge as an emergency vet, I applied to the Cutting Edge programme — which I’m really enjoying.
What’s the most enjoyable thing about being a vet? Helping animals and their owners every single day.
Why do you want to work in emergency and critical care? Every day is different and you never know what to expect. Cutting Edge is a great way to prepare for the ECC action. It helps you feel confident from the first day.
What would your advice be to someone who is thinking of becoming a vet? It’s not easy to become a vet and sometimes you may feel you aren’t as valued as you’d like to be. But if veterinary medicine is what you love, you’ll have the opportunity to develop your career and enjoy your job every day.
What do you like to do outside of work? I like to travel the world and see new things, as well as doing all kinds of sports to keep me fit. I’m also really passionate about painting.
Tell me an interesting fact no one else knows about you: I love to paint outdoors!
The next intake for Cutting Edge is in January, and places are filling up fast. We are also recruiting for more experienced vets for Refresh Your Edge. If you, or any vets you know, are interested in applying, please call the Vets Now recruitment team for more information on 01383 841181.
