Vets Now saves gravely ill dog with products supplied by Pet Blood Bank UK

Vets Now Lincoln were recently called upon to save the life of a gravely ill dog who was brought into the clinic over the Christmas and New Year period.

Ben, a 3 year old male Labrador, was admitted to the clinic suffering from vomiting and diarrhoea with blood, combined with an extremely low red blood cell count.  Ben's condition was extremely serious and he was in urgent need of a blood transfusion.

Fortunately for Ben, his owner, Mr Yates from Burton, was able to collect life saving blood products from the nearby Vets Now Nottingham clinic which were supplied by Pet Blood Bank UK (PBBuk), the UK's first national canine blood donation service and the Vets Now Lincoln team were able to perform a transfusion immediately.

Speaking about the emergency procedure, Livia Benato, Senior Veterinary Surgeon at Vets Now Lincoln commented: "Thanks to the collaboration and support of the Vets Now Nottingham clinic and PBBuk, the procedure went quickly and smoothly without losing any time trying to source the blood products to perform the much needed transfusion.  Without quick access to these products, we would not have been able to save Ben's life and we're absolutely delighted that he is making a good recovery after being in such grave danger of losing his life."

We're pleased to say that Ben now has a healthy red blood count and is recovering quickly, wagging his tail and eating well again.  He spent 3 days being cared for at his local veterinary practice during the day and was looked after by the Vets Now team at night time and was discharged just after New Year.

Ben's owner, Mr Yates said; "We are so grateful to both of the Vets Now clinics and also PBBuk, without whom Ben certainly would not have made it.  We're thrilled to have him back home although he still has a little way to go before he's completely back to full health, he's certainly much brighter and more like his old self".
