Vets Now, who provide an Out of Hours emergency veterinary service in 30 clinics across the UK was recently called upon to provide life saving treatment to a dog which was presented to the Gateshead clinic with a stick through its throat.

Bramley, a 12 year old Smooth Coated Collie’s owner, Mrs Atkinson was horrified when she saw the extent of Bramley’s injury and since the accident happened outside normal daytime practice hours, Bramley’s owner rushed him to the Vets Now clinic in Stoneygate Lane to seek emergency treatment.

Commenting about this particular case, Jo Leathers, Senior Veterinary Surgeon at Vets Now Gateshead said; "Often we don’t know what sort of emergency we’re going to see next but this was a particularly distressing case for both Bramley and his owner. We quickly explored a number of options and decided that due to Bramley’s age, we would place an oesophagostomy tube in his neck and feed him by tube. We administered painkillers and made him comfortable throughout the night and by the morning, he was well enough to be transferred back to his own vet for further care."

Speaking about the incident, Mrs Atkinson said "We are extremely grateful to Vets Now for their expertise and the standard of treatment and care Bramley received in the clinic. It was a very distressing situation for everyone and the team acted quickly and calmly to make Bramley as

comfortable as possible and treat his injury. Without Vets Now, I’m not sure what would have happened to Bramley and we’re delighted to see him bounding about, back to his old self".
