Jennifer Devey DVM DACVECC
Jennifer Devey is a 1988 graduate of Ontario Veterinary College, University of Guelph. She did her internship and residency at the Animal Emergency Center in Milwaukee, W and became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care in 1996 and completed a residency in surgery in 2003. Jennifer is the Director of Emergency Services and Intensive Care Unit at California Animal Hospital Veterinary Specialty Group in Los Angeles, CA.
Ava Firth BS DVM MVS MACVSc DACVECC MRCVS
Ava Firth graduated in 1986 from Ohio State University. She worked in the first private veterinary emergency centre in Melbourne, Australia between 1986 and 1992 before joining the Department of Veterinary Clinic and Hospital at the University of Melbourne to establish the Western Animal Emergency Centre. She became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care in 1993. Since coming to the UK in late 2004, she has developed and delivered the on-site training program throughout 31 Vets Now clinics as well as CPD seminars for practitioners. Other professional activities include chair of the EVECCS Standards of Practice Committee, and seats on various ACVECC committees. In her spare time, she is an active member of a ladies barbershop chorus.
Derek Flaherty BVMS DVA DipECVAA MRCA MRCVS FHEA
RCVS Recognised Specialist in Veterinary Anaesthesia, European Veterinary Specialist in Anaesthesia
Derek qualified from the University of Glasgow in 1988, and then spent 6 years working for the People's Dispensary for Sick Animals. He returned to the Veterinary School in 1994 as Resident in Anaesthesia, became a Lecturer in 1997, and was appointed Head of the Anaesthesia Service in 2001. He holds the RCVS Diploma in Veterinary Anaesthesia, and the Diploma of the European College of Veterinary Anaesthesia. Derek has gained Specialist status from both the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, and the European College of Veterinary Anaesthesia, as well as membership status of the Royal College of Anaesthetists. His main interests are in total intravenous anaesthesia in the dog, and neurosurgical anaesthesia. He is Head of the Nursing School in the Faculty, and is also Deputy Director of the Small Animal Hospital.
Elisa M. Mazzaferro DVM MS PhD DACVECC
Elisa Mazzaferro graduated from Michigan State University in 1997, then completed an emergency and critical care internship at the Veterinary Institute of Trauma, Emergency and Critical Care in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Following her internship, she completed a dual residency and PhD programme in Emergency and Critical Care at Colorado State University, and became board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care in 2002. Since that time, she has been employed as the Director of Emergency Services at Wheat Ridge Veterinary Specialists, a large multi-specialty referral hospital near Denver, Colorado. Personal and professional activities include Case Reports Editor of the Journal of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care, Scientific Program Committee of the Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society, Program Chair of the Denver Area Veterinary Medical Society, and co-author of 2 textbooks on the topics of emergency and critical care. Dr. Mazzaferro is a active speaker at conferences, and in her spare time, devotes love and attention to her orchids and pug, Vinnie.
Alan Robinson BVSc MRCVS DMS
Alan Robinson qualified as a Veterinary Surgeon in Australia and has 23 years experience in practice in the UK and Australia. He has run his own mixed multi-branch practice for 12 years in the UK and studied for a Diploma in Management. Alan has worked as a consultant in the areas of technical service, training, product development and marketing for the veterinary pharmaceutical industry and has successfully delivered coaching and management consultancy in electronics, pharmaceutical, global retail and veterinary industries. The Virtual Veterinary Company was formed in 1995 in response to a need within the veterinary industry for a more integrated approach to management and marketing. Current projects in the veterinary market include benchmarking, seminars, CPD workshops and practice performance management.
Freda Scott-Park BVM&S PhD Hon.DVM&S MRCVS
Freda Scott-Park qualified from the Royal (Dick) in Edinburgh, in 1979. Despite her best intentions to go straight into practice, she was persuaded to study for a PhD in canine cardiology after which she went onto work for eight years in Glasgow in a mixed, mainly small animal practice. Following a career break to have children, she kept her hand in as a regular locum at both PDSA branches in Glasgow and she also taught student veterinary nurses at Edinburgh's Telford College. For the past 8 years, Freda has read ECGs derived from studies into new pharmaceutical compounds with a view to detecting ECG abnormalities that could be a problem in their clinical use in humans. She was President of the British Small Animal Veterinary Association in 2003 - 2004 and President of the British Veterinary Association in 2005 - 2006. She is a founder trustee of the Pet Blood Bank UK. Currently, Freda's clinical work is confined to looking after the organic dairy herd of Ayrshires, Friesians and Limousin-crosses on the shores of Loch Lomond along with the farm collie, a couple of cats and various rats and hamsters.
Jenny Walton BVM&S MRCVS
Jenny Walton qualified from the Royal Dick School of Veterinary Studies in 1998. She spent 4 years in mixed practice in Yorkshire and Northumberland prior to moving into the field of Emergency and Critical Care. She spent 4 years at Gateshead Vets Now and moved to the new Middlesbrough Vets Now clinic in Oct 2006. She sits on the Vets Now Clinical Board, headed the Vets Now blood donor project and is now Veterinary Supervisor for the Pet Blood Bank UK.
Elizabeth Welsh BVMS CertVA CertSAS PhD MRCVS
Liz graduated from the University of Glasgow in 1989. Following graduation she was employed as a House Surgeon at the University of Glasgow where she subsequently undertook studies leading to the award of PhD in 1993. After working as a general surgeon in an urban small animal practice she joined The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies and worked first as a senior clinical scholar in small animal surgery and then as a Lecturer and Senior Lecturer in small animal soft tissue surgery. She currently works in a rural first opinion practice but remains an Honorary Fellow at the University of Edinburgh. Liz sits on the Vets Now Clinical Board.
Amanda Boag MA VETMB DipACVIM DipACVECC FHEA MRCVS
Amanda graduated from Cambridge University in 1998. Having completed internships at both the Royal Veterinary College, London (1998-99) and the Veterinary Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (1999-2000), she returned to the Royal Veterinary College in September 2000 to pursue a residency in Small Animal Internal Medicine and gained her American Diploma in 2003. She has subsequently completed a residency in Emergency and Critical Care achieving Diplomate status in Emergency and Critical Care in 2005. She is currently a Lecturer in ECC and Head of the Emergency and Critical Care Service at the Royal Veterinary College.
Wendy Barnett VN DipAVN (Surgical)
Wendy Barnett qualified as a Veterinary Nurse in December 1992. She started in mixed animal practice in Cornwall before spending 2 years as a locum in the UK. In 1996 she took a head nurse position in Sussex to pursue a Diploma in Advanced Veterinary Nursing (Surgical) which she gained in March 1999. In 2000 Wendy moved into the emergency and critical care field eventually taking a position as clinical manager with Vets Now at their Bristol clinic. Wendy used her time off from the emergency shifts to train as a human phlebotomist for the National Health Service. This phlebotomy interest lead to Wendy being given the post of pet blood bank researcher for Vets Now in January 2006 - the research has taken Wendy to both the USA and Australia. Vets Now agreed to raise the funds to support the UK's first Pet Blood Bank Charity on completion of the research programme. Wendy currently resides as a trustee and is the authorisation holder of the VMD licence for Pet Blood Bank UK.
Dr Jacques Penderis BVSc MVM PhD CertVR DipECVN MRCVS
RCVS and European Recognised Specialist in Veterinary Neurology
Senior Lecturer in Veterinary Neurology
Jacques Penderis graduated from the University of Pretoria (Onderstepoort) in 1993. Jacques is Senior Lecturer in Veterinary Neurology at Glasgow University Veterinary School and Head of the Clinical Neurology Service, having previously completed a Residency in neurology and Masters Degree on Feline Spongiform Encephalopathy at Glasgow. He obtained his PhD from the University of Cambridge on CNS remyelination in 2003. Previously Jacques worked at the Animal Health Trust as clinical neurologist, head of the Neurology/Neurosurgery Unit and latterly as senior research neurologist. He received the John Presthus prize from the ECVN in 1998. Jacques clinical and research interests include neurosurgery, spinal cord injury, seizure disorders, genetic diseases and neuro-ophthalmology.
